La prima intervista di whereandwhat, sono emozionata. Per cominciare, ho scelto una destinazione che è in cima alla lista dei miei futuri viaggi: Tel Aviv!
A svelarci le imperdibili chicche e i luoghi più speciali, Alice, che abita lì da 6 mesi, ha finito gli studi presso l’università di Tel Aviv e attualmente lavora in una galleria d’arte.
That’s the first time I interview a friend for whereandwhat and i’m quite excited about it! As first topic, I chose a destination that is at the top of my “travel-bucket” list: Tel Aviv!

Ciao Ali! Innanzitutto grazie, sono felice di ampliare gli orizzonti di whereandwhat a posti che ancora non ho avuto la fortuna di visitare.
So che te lo chiederanno in tanti ma sono curiosa di sapere come mai hai scelto Tel Aviv?
Questa è una domanda che mi fanno tutti, sia in Italia che qui in Israele. Prima di tutto devo dire che non sono ebrea, perché una delle ragioni principali per cui le persone si trasferiscono qui è proprio la religione. La scelta di venire qui è stata dettata abbastanza dal caso: dovevo scegliere una meta per l’exchange e, siccome in triennale ero stata in Australia, questa volta mi sarebbe piaciuto trovare un posto più vicino. Tra le mie cinque preferenze, sono stata presa a Tel Aviv, città di cui non sapevo nulla e che mi è stata fortemente consigliata da mio papà. Ho deciso quindi di partire: è stata una delle scelte migliori della mia vita considerato che, non solo mi trovo in un posto meraviglioso, ma che sa offrire davvero di tutto. Impossibile non innamorarsi di Tel Aviv!

I’m sure that’s the most frequent question people make you, but I am truly interested in knowing what made you chose Tel Aviv…
This is a very common question; everyone always wonder why I decided to come to Israel. Honestly there is no specific reason, I am not Jewish and I randomly decided to come here when applying for the exchange program in my home university. On my first exchange during my bachelor I decided to go to Sydney, this time I really wanted to go somewhere close by, possibly in Europe. I had five options and I ended up being accepted in Tel Aviv! I was quite scared in the beginning because I knew nothing about the city, I barely knew that it was located in Israel. Now, I can say it was one of the best choices in my life, there hasn’t been one occasion where I have regretted my decision, and if it wasn’t for my dad suggesting me to come here I would have never even considered it! I’m in love with Israel and it’s impossible not to appreciate all this city has to offer!’
Se decidessi di venire a trovarti ma avessi a disposizione solamente tre giorni, quali sarebbero i must che non potrei assolutamente perdere?
Tel Aviv è stupenda, ma è solamente una piccola città in mezzo ad un intero paese da scoprire. Avessi a disposizione tre giorni, personalmente ne passerei uno a Tel Aviv e gli altri due a visitare Gerusalemme, il Mar Morto, Masada e magari un po’ di Cisgiordania.
Tel Aviv è una città dinamica, giovane e creativa. Una città in cui tutto cambia ad una velocità impressionante, così come chi ci vive, è difficile e stimolante allo stesso tempo! Non per altro la chiamano la “start up nation” cuore dell’innovazione. Si estende sul mare, le temperature sono perfette e le persone fantastiche. Non ci si sente mai soli!
Io sono un’appassionata di arte e Tel Aviv offre la possibilità di conoscere la storia e la cultura della città e della nazione. Consiglio tre musei: il museo di Israele, che permette di ripercorrere la vita di Israele dalle sue origini a oggi, il Museo d’arte di Tel Aviv che ha un’esposizione permanente di arte moderna e il Museo della Diaspora, che ripercorre la storia ebraica della diaspora. Per i più sportivi, Tel Aviv offre qualsiasi sport estremo: surf, wakeboard e sci d’acqua, kitesurf, paracadutismo ecc. Insomma, non ci si annoia mai!
Consiglierei poi di affittare una macchina e visitare Gerusalemme, una città che ha un impatto fortissimo, sia dal punto di vista psicologico che culturale. Tutta la città vecchia è meravigliosa, l’incrocio e la coesistenza delle diverse religioni (cristiani, ebrei e musulmani) inevitabilmente porta a riflettere su diverse questioni. Questa mescolanza e convivenza di diverse culture ha un impatto su tutti, ma diverso da persona a persona. Proseguirei visitando Masada, un’antica fortezza situata su di una rocca, luogo d’assedio dell’esercito romano durante la prima guerra giudaica. Si può raggiungere sia a piedi attraverso il “sentiero del serpente” – chiamato cosi per tutti i tornanti che lo rendevano un gravissimo ostacolo per la fanteria – sia con la funivia, per i meno sportivi. Dall’alto si gode di una vista mozzafiato sul Mar Morto e sul deserto.
A questo punto proseguirei il mio viaggio verso il Mar Morto. La strada che si attraversa è circondata dal deserto del Negev, in mezzo al nulla… a dir poco straordinario. L’esperienza del Mar Morto la conosciamo tutti, si galleggia nell’acqua per l’alta concentrazione di sale, questo decisamente rende l’esperienza unica nel suo genere!
Infine, andrei in Cisgiordania principalmente per visitare Betlemme, città palestinese e luogo di nascita di Gesù.
Questo è chiaramente quello che farei se avessi solamente in tre giorni a disposizione, anche in termini di fattibilità perché ci sono cosi tanti posti meravigliosi da visitare anche nel nord: Haifa, Akko, Cesarea, il mare di Galiela e tanto altro. Tre giorni sono sufficienti ma io consiglio di trascorrerne qualcuno in più!
Tel Aviv is a very small city located in the middle of a stunning nation to discover. If I had only three days to spend in Israel I would stay one day in Tel Aviv and I would do a road trip to visit Jerusalem, the dead sea and Masada, also the west bank possibly. Tel aviv is a dynamic, young and creative city thus definitely worth to visit. It’s a city where everything changes in an impressive way, as well as people, this is tough and stimulating at the same time! As a matter of fact, it’s called the “start-up nation”, heart of innovation, which knows how to work hard and play hard! The city is located on the Mediterranean Sea, temperatures are perfect and people are amazing, you will never feel alone.
I’m passionate about arts and Tel Aviv offers the possibility to learn both the culture and the history of the city itself and the whole nation. I advise three museums in particular: The museum of Israel, which enables to learn about the life of Israel from its origins to nowadays. The Museum of Tel Aviv which has a permanent exposition of modern arts and The Museum of the Jewish People which shows the history of Judaism and the diaspora. For the more athletic, Tel Aviv offers every extreme sport you can imagine: surf, wakeboard and water-ski, kitesurf, skydiving etc. Basically, there is no time to get bored!
My advice is to rent a car and visit Jerusalem, this city has a great impact both from a psychological and cultural point of view. It’s definitely a MUST if you visit Israel. The old city is breath-taking and the coexistence of the three different religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islamism inevitably make people reflect on a broad number of matters. It has a great impact on everyone yet everyone is affected differently. I’d proceed visiting Masada that is an ancient fortification in the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau where there was the siege of the roman troops during the first Jewish-Roman war.
At this point I would continue my trip towards the dead sea. The road is located in the Negev desert which is pretty extraordinary because you are literally in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the sand. We all know that is experience is a must because of the fact that you float in the water due to the high salt concentration. Lastly I would go to the West Bank especially to visit Bethlehem, city where Jesus Christ was born according to the Bible.
Of course this is what I would do if I only had three days because If I had more time I would definitely visit other places in Northern Israel such as Haifa, Akko, Caesarea, The Galilean sea and many other places. Three days are sufficient to visit but I would advise to take more time.
Ora voglio che ci sveli quelle chicche che solo una insider può darci. Immagina la tua giornata perfetta che si compone dei tuoi luoghi preferiti per: colazione, pranzo, cena, cocktail, discoteca e spuntino notturno.
La mia giornata ideale inizierebbe con una colazione/brunch in uno dei seguenti posti: DELICATESSEN, IL CENTRO, THE LITTLE PRINCE, BUCKE. Questi posti si trovano tutti nei pressi di Rothschild o Dizengoff, che sono le due vie principali. Sicuramente dopo farei un giro in uno dei tanti mercatini di Tel Aviv che sono stupendi: HA CARMEL MARKET, SARONA MARKET oppure il mercato di JAFFA specialmente se fosse un venerdì mattina (prima che inizi Shabbat – in cui i prezzi sono tutti al ribasso). Qui si trova veramente di tutto: cibo, frutta e verdura fresca, spezie, oggetti di tutti i tipi (anche elettrodomestici!). Poi farei una passeggiata sulla spiaggia e la percorrerei tutta da nord a sud o viceversa (le spiagge principali sono FRISHMAN e GORDON). Il punto più a sud è dove c’è Jaffa, città vecchia, stupenda! Vale la pena visitarla sia di giorno che di notte per la vista spettacolare di tutta la coastline di Tel Aviv.
Orario aperitivo andrei in uno di questi posti, che valgono anche per dopo cena: SPEAKEASY, CONCIERGE, SURAMARE, ROTHSCHILD 12 e SPUTNIK. Alcuni di questi hanno una bellissima vista specialmente Suramare. Se si vuole un posto più movimentato andrei da MANDALIMOS, davvero divertente dove… a una certa ora si inizia a ballare sui tavoli 🙂
Per cena andrei sicuramente nel mio posto preferito: SOCIAL CLUB ma ce ne sono mille buonissimi come ad esempio: SHILA, PORT SAID, HA SALON, KITCHEN MARKET o ABRAXAS (sto citando solo i miei preferiti). Gli israeliani hanno una cultura culinaria ottima, il cibo è buonissimo ovunque e si ispira molto al cibo italiano. Se volessi fare una cena più tipica andrei a Jaffa a mangiare a THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA che è decisamente un must, antipasti a non finire, tutti cibi tipici israeliani: falafel, hummus etc. un’esperienza da non perdere!
Per quanto riguarda la vita notturna, Tel Aviv è la città che non si ferma mai e ti tiene occupato per tutta la notte fino alle prime ore del mattino. In Israele il fine settimana inizia il giovedì sera, e i giorni di maggiore attività sono il giovedì, il venerdì e il sabato. La domenica non è giorno di riposo in questo paese, quindi ci si può divertire anche di domenica sera.
A me piace la musica techno quindi per me i locali migliori sono BREAKFAST CLUB (volendo un locale per after tutti i giorni), THE BLOCK, BOOTLEG e BEIT MAARIV. Ci sono anche degli eventi organizzati da un gruppo di ragazzi: MONOCHROME, sono delle feste pazzesche con location diverse: deserto, rooftop… vale davvero la pena partecipare! Tel Aviv è diventata una specie di Berlino sul mare, con un vibe unico e locali underground.
Cosa mi rimane? Spuntino notturno… ottimi hamburger da VITRINA oppure in Rothschild si trova facilmente qualcosa di aperto.
Now I’d like you to reveal us some tips that only a true insider could give us. Imagine and describe us how your perfect day would in terms of places. Where would you have: breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktail, club and – how not to mention it – the late night snack!!
My ideal day would start with a brunch in one of these places: DELICATESSEN, CENTRO, THE LITTLE PRINCE or BUCKE. These are all located in Rothschild or Dizengoff which are the main streets in Tel Aviv. Alternatively, I would go directly to the markets: HA CARMEL MARKET, SARONA MARKET or the market in Jaffo especially if it’s a Friday morning (straight before the beginning of Shabbat because everything is cheaper). Here you can find whatever you are searching for: food, fresh fruits and vegetables, species and every kind of object. Subsequently I would go for a walk on the beach and I would go all the way from north to south or the other way round from Jaffo which is the old city all the way up passing across the main beaches which are Gordon and Frishman beach. An important advice is to visit Jaffo during the night and admire the stunning view of Tel Aviv’s coastline.
When the sunset starts I would go to one of these places to have a drink which are very nice also after dinner: SPEAKEASY, CONCIERGE, SURAMARE, ROTHSCHILD 12 and SPUTNIK. Some of these have an amazing view of Tel Aviv especially Suramare. If you are searching for a place with music and dancing you should certainly go to MANDALINOS which is a lot of fun and you’ll enjoy dancing on tables with other people there.
For what concerns dinner for sure I would go in my favourite place which is SOCIAL CLUB but there are so many amazing restaurants in Tel Aviv it is very difficult to choose. The best in my opinion are: SHILA, PORT SAID, HA SALON, KITCHEN MARKET and ABRAXAS. Israeli’s have an incredible talent and a great culinary culture. Food is excellent everywhere and its very Mediterranean, sometimes it reminds me Italian food. If you want to have a more typical dinner then the restaurant I would advice is THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, which is located in Jaffo and is definitely a must!
Regarding nightlife Tel Aviv is the city that never stops, you can find stuff to do until the first hours in the morning. In Israel the weekend starts on Thursday and along side with the weekend the party begins. Sunday isn’t considered the day in which you rest thus also on Sundays you will manage to have fun. I love techno music and Tel Aviv is a very underground city. According to my opinion, the best clubs are BREAKFAST CLUB, THE BLOCK (which has a wide range of great Djs playing), BOOTLEG and BEIT MAARIV. There are also events called MONOCHROME, which are parties organized in amazing locations: desert, rooftops..when these events show up you can’t miss them. Tel Aviv became a sort of Berlin with the sea with a unique vibe.
What else? If you wanna eat something after clubbing there are many places in Rothschild for example VITRINA if you want to have a hamburger, but there are also other small bars always open where you can get food.
Per finire mi piacerebbe sapere quale sarà il ricordo che porterai a casa con più piacere di questa tua esperienza…
Il ricordo che porterò a casa è sicuramente la magia nell’aria di Tel Aviv, una città che dona un senso di libertà ineguagliabile. Ovviamente poi ci sono un’infinità di ricordi che custodirò nel mio cuore: tutti i viaggi che ho fatto in Israele, durante i quali ho sempre avuto occasione di imparare qualcosa di nuovo specialmente dalle persone che ho conosciuto. Israele ha una cultura affascinante e il loro modo diverso di essere e di pensare mi ha dato la possibilità di crescere e di migliorarmi sotto diversi punti di vista.
To conclude, I’d like to know: among all the good memories you will have of this experience, which one will be the sweetest that you’ll keep in your heart forever…
What I will never forget about this experience are definitely the people, Tel Aviv is the city that never made me feel alone even if I knew no one when I arrived there. You will always find someone that talks to you and is willing to share thoughts and experiences. We have a lot to learn from this culture and I am lucky that I had the occasion to do so. As well, the strong feeling of freedom that I experienced in Israel for the first time in my life along with the openness to diversity and acceptance of others which could surprise some of you but it’s a truth.
