WADI RUM DESERT!

Voglio raccontarvi della mia esperienza (la prima della mia vita) nel deserto! Il deserto in questione è il Wadi Rum, famoso per il film Lawrence d’Arabia (da vedere! ha vinto 7 premi oscar!), in Giordania. Questa enorme distesa di rocce (non è il classico deserto dell’immaginario comune con sabbia e palme) si trova a 60km da Aqaba. Il modo più classico per visitare i luoghi particolari all’interno del Wadi Rum è la jeep. Arrivando dalla strada principale (è l’unica, non potete sbagliarvi) si trova una sorta di “ingresso” nel deserto dove potrete pianificare assieme ai locali la vostra visita in jeep per stabilire le tappe (il prezzo è di circa 70JD).
Per mia fortuna, ero accompagnata da una guida straordinaria che, in poche ore, mi ha fatto vivere tutte le suggestioni possibili: ho scalato a piedi nudi una duna dalla quale ho potuto apprezzare la visuale mozzafiato, siamo passati davanti ad una carovana di cammelli e beduini, abbiamo ammirato le incisioni rupestri, abbiamo bevuto il thè sotto una tenda, per ripararci dal sole nelle ore più calde, dove alcuni beduini vendevano prodotti locali.

“Questo è il paesaggio terrestre più simile a quel che ho visto camminando sulla Luna” dichiarò James Irwin, l’astronauta dell’Apollo 15. Per questo motivo il deserto giordano è anche detto Valle della Luna. Forse i più scettici potrebbero pensare che tutte queste attrattive siano un modo per accalappiare i turisti con gite organizzate, ma le suggestioni che si provano sono vere ed autentiche e, soprattutto, non vedo altro modo per visitare un deserto (di certo non ci si può addentrare da soli, zaino in spalla, all’avventura! no?).

I want to tell you about my experience, the very first in my life, in the desert! The desert I’m talking about is the Wadi Rum in Jordan, famous because of the movie “Lawrence of Arabia” (which is absolutely a must-see! It won 7 Oscars!). This vast stretch of rocks (it is not the classical desert that we all imagine, with sand and palms) is 60km away from Aqaba. The most classic way to visit these special places of the Wadi Rum is by jeep. Coming from the main road (it’s the only one, you can’t get it wrong) you arrive at a kind of “entrance” of the desert, where you can plan, together with the natives, your trip by jeep and decide on your stops (the price is around 70JD).
Luckily, I had an extraordinary guide who, in just a few hours, made me experience the most wonderful feelings: I climbed a dune bare foot and from there I could admire the breath-taking view, we passed by a camels and Bedouins caravan, we examined the petroglyphs and, to shelter from the sun during the hottest hours of the day, we had tea in a tent, where some Bedouins were selling local products.

“Wadi Rum…is the closest thing on Earth to what I saw when I walked on the moon”, stated James Irwin, astronaut of Apollo 15. That’s the reason why the Jordan desert is also called “Valley of the Moon”. Maybe the most sceptical may think that all these attractions are just a way to lure tourists with organized journeys, but the sensations that you can feel are authentic and, above all, I can’t imagine another way to visit a desert (certainly not the place to improvise a backpacking trip on your own!).
