Per raccontarvi la mia trasferta a New York voglio cominciare con la più newyorkese delle esperienze che ho vissuto: il mercato di Williamsburg, a Brooklyn!
Su consiglio di un’amica che vive nella grande mela e grazie anche al sole splendente, sabato ho trascorso una fantastica mattinata al mercato di Williamsburg.
Di cosa si tratta? Di un insieme di bancarelle dove si possono trovare specialità culinarie da ogni angolo del mondo: Etiopia, Vietnam, Italia, Cina, Messico, America…
Oltre alla vastissima scelta di cibo, questo luogo mi ha colpita per un altro motivo non da poco: la location! Dopo aver stabilito che il mio pranzo sarebbe stato a base di “rice burger”, ho potuto gustare questo particolarissimo panino con una vista mozzafiato sullo skyline di Manhattan.
L’impressione che ho avuto girando tra i banchetti è stata quella di vedere il mondo racchiuso in meno di un chilometro quadrato, non solo per il cibo diverso ma perché ogni bancarella era effettivamente gestita da persone provenienti dai vari paesi.
Tra gli acquirenti, invece, neanche l’ombra di un turista! Mi è sembrato un food market per locali (ma questa è stata solo la mia impressione… d’altronde, io per prima ero una turista 😉 ).
Ho riempito per bene la pancia, mi sono goduta il sole e il panorama…e poi ho deciso di fare un giro del quartiere, che non avevo mai visitato prima.
Appena svoltato l’angolo, 100 metri dal mercato, un’insegna colorata mi ha incuriosita. Non ho potuto fare a meno di entrare da Artists&Fleas, una sorta di mercato/negozio al coperto dove ho dovuto nascondere il mio portafoglio nella tasca più remota della mia borsa per evitare di finire, dopo soli due giorni di viaggio, tutti i risparmi! Avrei comprato qualunque cosa!!!
Abiti vintage, “librorologi” (capirete guardando le foto), poster, bijoux, magliette con stampe, quadri, scarpe… tutto accompagnato da dj set 🙂
Certe cose le vedi solo in America, ed è per questo che io la amo!

I’ll tell you about my vacation in New York starting from the most typical New York experience I’ve ever had: the Williamsburg market in Brooklyn!
A friend of mine who lives in the Big Apple recommended the place and I had an amazing Saturday morning, made even nicer thanks to the sunny day!
What is it? It’s a market with a lot of stalls where you can find culinary specialities from all over the world: Ethiopia, Vietnam, Italy, China, Mexico… Besides the very wide selection of food, this place also hit me because of the setting! After buying a “rice burger” for lunch, I ate it while observing the breath-taking skyline of Manhattan.
As I was wandering round the stalls, I had the impression of seeing the world in less than one square kilometer, not only because of the variety of food but also because each stall was actually run by people coming from the different countries. It looked like a normal food market for locals, infact I couldn’t see any tourist (but this is just my impression… I’m a tourist, after all).
I satisfied my appetite, enjoyed the sun and the view… and then I decided to go round the block, since I had never visited it.
As soon as I turned the corner, just 100 meters from the market, my attention was caught by a colourful shop sign. I couldn’t help entering Artists&Fleas, a kind of indoor market where I had to tuck my wallet away, at the bottom of my bag, to avoid spending all my savings just after two days of holiday! I would have bought everything!
Vintage clothes, “clock-books” (you’ll understand when you see the photos), posters, bijoux, printed t-shirts, paintings, shoes… and in the meanwhile, there was a live DJ set 🙂
There are things that you can only see in America and that’s why I love it!
